ABOUT THE TEACHER
This is my 9th year teaching at Woods Charter School, and I know it is going to be the best yet! I'm looking forward to meeting my new 5th graders and continuing my work with the fantastic 6th, 7th, and 8th graders.
I teach here at Woods because I get the opportunity to work with great kids and great faculty every day! It's important to me that every student learns how to be healthy and happy throughout this most challenging stage of his or her development.
I am originally from London, Ohio, just outside of Columbus. Growing up I took an interest in sports, Atari video games, drawing, and hanging out with friends. My background includes an enlistment in the U.S. Army, coaching youth, middle school, and high school basketball, administrative work in collegiate athletics, leading a church youth group, and teaching and advising college freshmen at RIT. I'm a proud graduate of the University of Kansas (Rock Chalk, Jayhawk!), Ball State University (IN), and Brockport State College in NY.
While in the military, I met my wonderful wife, Alecia, of nearly 18 years. We've lived in TN, KY, KS, IN, NY, and NC together. We have two terrific kids in Jana (7th grade) and James (4th grade) who are both attending Woods. We currently reside in Holly Springs.
In my free time I enjoy reading, learning new things, shooting hoops, badminton, reading, and spending time with my family. My spiritual life is a huge part of who I am also. In everything I do, I strive to honor God. I may not always be successful in accomplishing this feat, but it is certainly my purpose in life.
Currently, I also serve as a 7th grade adviser, the Director of Middle School Athletics, and am a Youth Hoops Basketball Clinic Instructor.
MIDDLE SCHOOL PE & HEALTH
In middle school, students are trying new things, hopefully figuring out who they are, and who they want to become. For this reason, it's important that students at this age get exposure to a wide variety of physical activities. That is why I make sure that I teach different activities every year. This year we will be learning flag football, track and field events, and wiffle ball to name a few. Outside of PE, students should be trying out activities such as martial arts, swimming, dance, or skate boarding. Ideally, by the time each student reaches high school, he or she has at least 2-3 physical activities that they really enjoy and can continue to use into adulthood.
It's also important that students learn personal and social responsibility. PE and Health are two of the best ways for students to learn those invaluable life skills in school. Things like exercising self-control, cooperation, creating a safe environment, including others, and displaying good sportsmanship during competition are just a few examples of how students grow each day in class.
In health class this year, students should experience a much improved curriculum with revamped lesson plans. It's my goal to help middle school students have fun in an active learning environment. Each grade has it's own specific, age appropriate curriculum. Please check the syllabus for unit details.
For the present academic year, students will be graded on the following scale:
85-100 Commendable (Com)
70-84.9 Satisfactory (S)
0-69.9 Needs Improvement (N)
Student grades will vary by grade:
5th grade 75% Personal and social responsibility
6th - 8th grade 25% Health tests/projects; 25% PE skills and knowledge; 50% Personal and social responsibility.
